Westminster and Whitehall

The opinions of Members of Parliament towards a proposed development will be of interest to their constituents and are likely to be reported by the local media.  MPs, therefore, can be high profile generators, reflectors and influencers of public opinion. So, for many proposed developments, it is crucial that they are professionally informed and briefed on the project.

For larger and more strategic schemes, there may be a need to win recognition and support for a scheme from a wider group of Parliamentarians and from within Whitehall and regional institutions of government.

Planning policy is also, of course, often addressed by the ongoing Parliamentary legislative programme and is an increasingly prominent topic on the political agenda.

The 2008 Planning Act, for example, establishes the Infrastructure Planning Commission and the framework of National Policy Statements within which its decisions will be made.  The Act also introduces the Community Infrastructure Levy, which enables local authorities to charge a tariff on development to provide for ‘infrastructure’ in the local areas.  We alert clients to evolving changes to statutory regulation - what the implications are and how they need to respond.

Key services include:

  • Monitoring: ensuring our clients are aware of the latest relevant developments in Westminster and Whitehall activity.
  • Relationship management: helping clients identify and build good relations with relevant stakeholders from the world of politics.
  • Events: creating specialist events that will engage political audiences.
  • Party conferences: organising meetings, briefings and fringe events for clients, enabling them to maximise the value from attending political party conferences.
  • Training and preparation: helping clients prepare for key meetings with politicians and Parliamentary groups, such as Select Committees.
