Green Issues Communications

 

Tom Curtin
Chief Executive

Tom Curtin founded Green Issues in 1998. He was previously the Head of Media Relations at Thames Water during Privatisation and Head of Corporate Communications at Nirex. He has a degree in science and has had a long career in financial and technical public relations.

 

Tom is the author of Managing Green Issues, published by Macmillan in the Summer of 2000. He also adapted a book on sociodynamics, Managing Sensitive Issues from French into English. Tom has also been published in the Journal of Communication Management.

 

He is a visiting professor at the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Switzerland. Tom has also lectured on Public Relations at the Universities of Bournemouth and Brighton.

 

Simon Miller
Managing Director

Simon joined Green Issues as managing director in November 2007. He was previously UK managing director of APCO Worldwide, achieving record UK revenues for each of the three years the company was under his stewardship and winning the 2007 Public Affairs News Award for UK Consultancy of the Year.  Earlier in his career Simon spent almost a decade in the Public Affairs and Corporate Policy team at Hill and Knowlton, including four years as a Director.  He has also worked in senior in-house public affairs roles in the transport industry and began his communications career in the charity sector.  Simon is a former winner of the PR Week Award for Best Public  Affairs Campaign, is a member of the Institute of Directors and the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and a Fellow of the Industry and Parliament Trust

 

Kelly Edwards
Operations Director (kellye@greenissues.com)
Kelly is a former General Election candidate, having stood for the Labour Party in Hertsmere in May 2005 gaining over 11,500 votes. In 2002 she was a council candidate in the London elections. Before joining Green Issues in spring 2004, Kelly spent six years working at the House of Commons as a Press Officer to an MP and as a Senior Parliamentary Researcher and assistant to a several ministers. During this time, she also worked as a part-time PR consultant focussing on national political campaigns on behalf of the charity sector. For several years, Kelly was the Political Secretary of Chipping Barnet Labour Party and an elections ward organiser. She has a BSc Politics Degree. This experience, combined with her former role as a council LEA school governor, means that Kelly has a thorough knowledge of both national and local authority politics.

 

Gabriel Abulafia

A long-standing Labour activist, Gabriel began his career working in Parliament as assistant to David Blunkett, Alan Milburn and Stephen Byers. From the 1997 General Election until April 2000 he was parliamentary assistant to Karen Buck MP, chair of the London Group of Labour MPs. He then joined Citigate Public Affairs, a Westminster lobbying company, where he worked on a wide range of issues including major transport projects.

 

James Garland
Director (jamesg@greenissues.com)
James graduated from the University of Southampton in 1998 with a degree in Politics and International Relations BSc (Soc) Hons. He has since worked in advertising and marketing, managing accounts including Rolls-Royce, Lacoste and Sothebys. He joined Green Issues in April 2005. James has been an active member of the Labour party for a number of years.

 

Nick Bohane

Nick Bohane recently joined Green Issues after consulting on planning issues for BT where he ran a nationwide stakeholder programme.

 

Before Green Issues, Nick was a founding director of Cityspace, a street furniture business, that delivers e-government and transport solutions to local authorities.

 

Prior to that, he was a senior manager with the international PR firm, Burson-Marsteller, working in both the UK and internationally.

 

Richard Royal

Richard graduated from Lancaster University with a BA (Hons) in History and Politics and an MA in Defence and Security Analysis. He has been a member of the Conservative Party since 1997 and was particularly active in the award-winning Lancaster University Conservative Future branch. He was employed as Press & Communications Officer to Andrew Rosindell MP before working in Export Licencing at the Department of Trade and Industry. Immediately before joining Green Issues in August 2005, Richard spearheaded the successful Conservative 2005 General Election campaign in Hammersmith & Fulham, gaining one of the best results in the country. He is Prospective Council Candidate in Hammersmith & Fulham.

 

Richard is particularly experienced in the design of political literature and is responsible for the company's marketing, events organisation, media relations and business development in non-house building sectors.

 

Harry Hudson
Senior Account Manager (harryh@greenissues.com)
Harry formerly held the executive management post of Public Relations Manager of Corporate Communications for Nirex and helped install its Crisis Management procedures as well as being involved in modifying and testing those of BNFL.

 

Prior to this, Harry worked for the South West Electricity Board where he developed an emergency plan (put into action during the storms of January 1990 when one-third of consumers were without power). He also helped set up an emergency centre at Headquarters, liaised with the media and staff and issued a series of daily advertisements in the press explaining progress. Harry read English and American Studies at Exeter University, graduating with a BA (Hons).

 

Chris Brown

Chris joined Green Issues in August 2004 and has a sound knowledge of local government and community involvement with an extensive background in business and politics. He was a Liberal Democrat councillor on Reading Borough Council from 2001-2004 and has gained an MBA from Bristol Business School with his dissertation on Corporate Community Involvement. Chris has 12 years experience in a variety of roles in the utilities and IT sectors, including over three years as a consultant working with a range of clients across the UK. He is also involved with the local voluntary and charity sectors, including as Chairman of Reading Young Enterprise.

 

Richard Halderthay

Richard
joined Green Issues in June 2006, after seven years work with the Conservative Party in Press and running election campaigns in marginal seats. During this time Richard acted as election agent to over 100 election candidates at all levels of Government, most recently successfully running the Conservatives' campaign in 2005 to win back Guildford, and was a member of the Party's training college; training activists in 'Winning Elections'. Richard is a politics graduate of Bristol and is a serving Southampton City Councillor since 2002, gaining involvement in Corporate Services, IT, Leisure & Tourism and more recently Public Health.

 

Will Scawn
Senior Account Manager (wills@greenissues.com)
Will has been with Green Issues since early 2004. He joined with a background in political research and experience of both local and regional government. A member of the Conservative Party, Will graduated from the University of Warwick with a degree in politics and is planning to stand as a candidate in the future. He is one of the company's experts in aviation and manages a number of complex sites. Will also runs the company's election analysis service.

 

Andrew Lester

Andrew joined Green Issues in November 2004 having worked for the Labour Party in the East Midlands, West Midlands, Eastern, London and South West regions. He was most recently the Political Organiser for Plymouth (the only Labour gain from the Conservatives in the 2003 elections) and has served as legal agent for over 100 candidates in both local and parliamentary campaigns.  Andrew also worked with Disabled Enabled Ltd liaising with local and national stakeholders to bring on-line disability guides to various parts of the UK. He has a degree in History from the University of Leicester.

 

Frank Browne

Frank Browne was actively involved in local government for 12 years, representing Remenham, Ruscombe and Wargrave on Wokingham Borough Council.  He served on the planning committee for three years, was chairman of the highways committee from 1997 to 2000 and in 2002, was elected leader of the council, a position he held for six years before standing down in May 2008.  He also chaired the Berkshire Leaders Group as well as representing Wokingham on the South East Regional Assembly and the South East Improvement Board. 

 

He was Theresa May's election aide in 1997 and campaign manager in 2005.

 

Jon Whitehouse

Jon has extensive experience of local government and practical politics having served as a district councillor in the East of England since 1999, holding several senior positions. He has 10 years experience of working for the Liberal Democrats in a variety of roles including campaigns posts in London and Devon, working as an assistant to Don Foster MP and four years as Political Assistant to the Liberal Democrat Group on Essex County Council. Jon joined Green Issues in May 2006 and he is responsible for a number of complex projects. He has a degree in History from the University of York.

 

Harry Watkinson

Harry graduated from Keele University with a BA (hons) in History and American Studies in 1999. After gaining his pre-entry certificate in journalism, he joined the Crawley News where he worked as a reporter for two years. In December 2002 Harry moved to Madrid to learn Spanish and work as a freelance journalist and TEFL teacher. He returned from Spain in December 2004 to campaign for the Labour Party in the general election and work as a researcher for Dod's Parliamentary Communications before joining Green Issues in September 2005.

 

Paul Harvey

Paul is the former leader of Basingstoke & Deane District Council (2005-6) and has strong links with a number of regional bodies such as SEERA, GOSE and SEEDA. In his role as council leader, Paul had strategic responsibility for the regeneration of Basingstoke town centre and the delivery of the Borough's Local Plan.

 

Paul is also a research academic specialising in defence and strategic studies, currently completing his doctorate at Reading University where he also lectures on comparative government and international politics. He is also involved with a number of local charities. 

 

Andrew Johnson

Andrew graduated from Lancaster University with a BA Hons in Politics and an MA in Diplomacy and International Relations. Since then he has worked at the DCLG dealing with issues relating to local government finance and as a researcher to Angela Browning MP. More recently, Andrew has worked as Political Assistant to the Conservative Group on Surrey County Council, currently the largest Conservative group in local government. During his time with Surrey County Council, he worked closely with the then Chairman of the South East England Regional Assembly as well as producing the Conservative Group manifesto for the 2005 County Elections.

 

In addition to this, he is also a councillor on the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham and is currently the Deputy Mayor of the borough. Andrew is a non executive director of Groundwork West London.

 

Rob Hill

Rob recently joined the Green Issues team in November 2005. His previous work experience was for the Civil Service having been employed in the Ministerial Correspondence Team. His main responsibilities were drafting letters on immigration cases from Ministers to fellow MPs and completing any outstanding casework on file.  Rob also has a strong background in academia, having studied Economics with Politics at Aberystwyth University and he recently completed a M.Sc. in Terrorism and International Relations at the same university.

 

James Cox

James graduated from York University with a BA in politics and is an active member of the Conservative Party. He was the election agent for Dumfrieshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale during the 2005 General Election, in which David Mundell became the only Scottish Conservative MP.

 

Katie Hill

Katie joined the team in December 2007 having worked for The Labour Party for four years. She was largely involved in campaigns for The Labour Party including the General Election 2005 and local and European elections. She holds a BSc (Hons) degree in Government and History from the London School of Economics.

 

Emma Webster

Account Manager (emmaw@greenissues.com)

Emma graduated from the University of Southampton in 2002 with a degree in Law.  She has worked in the political analysis and research department of the BBC, IT sales and for a political training organisation.  Emma has been a Conservative councillor in West Berkshire since 2003 and has cabinet responsibility for Safer and Stronger Communities which includes the areas of community planning and regeneration.

 

Steve Fifer

A graduate from the University of Birmingham and UCL, Steve has a strong background in political research. He has previously completed internships for Andrew Dismore MP's Constituency office, a Public Affairs company in London and an Internet Trade Body. Steve is an active member of the Labour Party and holds a BA in Political Science and a MA in Human Rights.

 

Peter Elms

Peter graduated from King's College London with a BA (Hons) in History and an MA in Modern History. Prior to joining Green Issues in January 2007, he completed internships with Andrew Love MP and a media lobby group. Peter is an active member of the Labour party.

 

Nick Maybanks

Nick graduated from the University of Birmingham with a degree in Medieval and Modern History, and has a strong research background which includes work for MPs and local councillors.  He has been involved in politics in Birmingham and the South-East, at both a local and national level.

 

Omar El Gamry

Omar has considerable communications experience after having campaigned on behalf of charities, NGOs, and corporate clients in the broadcasting industry. He is an active member of the Labour party and has interned for Barry Gardiner MP. Omar holds a BSc with Honours in Economics, Politics and International Studies from the University of Warwick.

 

Erika Bugnar

Erika joined the team in September 2007 after having worked as a research assistant for Struan Stevenson, a UK Tory MEP at the European Parliament in Brussels. She was involved in a variety of different project such as policy development and various committee works. She holds a BA (Hons) degree in International Relations and Politics from Coventry University.

 

Alex McAuley

Alex graduated from Cardiff University with a BScEcon in Politics.  Before joining Green Issues in May 2008, he completed a campaigns internship with Annette Brooke MP, after which he worked as her political assistant in Westminster.
